Calling Instructions
 

Long Distance Calling

You can use SIU provided authorization codes, calling cards or call collect.  10-10-220 programs will not work on campus.

1.  Using SIU Authorization Codes:

  • Dial-8 + Authorization Code + Area Code and Number to be called

  •  (NOTE:  DO NOT DIAL 1 BEFORE THE AREA CODE)
2.  Using Calling Cards:
  • Dial 9 +  your calling card number on your card

  •  
3.  Calling Collect:
  • Dial 9 + 0 + Area Code and Number to be called 

4.  800 or 877 Toll Free Calling

  • Dial 9 + 1 + ten digit toll free number.

Directory Assistance

1.  To dial Information for an on-campus number:

  • Dial zero (0)

  •  
2.  To dial Information for an off-campus number or
     long distance number:
  • Dial 8 + 6 digit Authorization Code (wait for tone) + Area Code + 555-1212

  •   (NOTE:  THERE IS A $1.10 CHARGE FOR EACH CALL)

Accepting Collect Calls:

Accepting collect calls to the University Housing rooms are PROHIBITED.  Should calls be accepted and we cannot determine the responsible party, the charge will be split between the students in the room.


Local Dialing Off Campus

1.  Dial 9 to get off campus.  Do not wait for a tone 
     after dialing 9.

  • Local calls include:
    • Carbondale:     351, 457, 529, 549, 527
    • Murphysboro:  684, 687, 565
    • De Soto:          867
    • Carterville:      985
    • Cobden:           893
    • Herrin:            942, 988
    • Hurst:             987
    • Royalton:         984
    • Elkville:           568
2.  Enhanced 911 service is available on campus at no
     additional cost.
  • In case of emergency, dial 911
International Calling Instructions
  • Dial 8 + Authorization Code + Country Code + City Code + Number to be called.

10 Number Speed Call

To Program or Change: 

1.   Lift handset 
2.  Dial 24 (Special dial tone is heard )
3.  Dial index code for the stored telephone number
     (0-9) 
4.  Dial the telephone number to be stored + pound (#)
     (Confirmation tone is heard )
5.  Replace handset 

 To Use: 

1.  Lift Handset 
2.  Dial star (*) + the index code (0- 9) + pound (#)

Call Forwarding

To Activate: 

1.  Lift handset 
2.  Dial 10 (Special dial tone is heard)
3.  Dial number to which calls are to be forwarded 

To Cancel: 

1.  Lift handset 
2.  Dial 11 (Confirmation tone is heard)
3.  Replace handset 

Notes:

  • Calls may be forwarded to local off-campus numbers 
  • Call Waiting will not function if your call forwarding is activated

Call Waiting

To respond to a Call Waiting tone heard during conversation, you may select A or B. 

Selection A:

1.  To answer new call depress LINK button once (first
     call will be put on hold) 
2.  Talk to incoming caller.
3.  Depress LINK button to alternate between callers. 

Selection B:

1.  Abandon the current call by replacing the handset. 
2.  Your telephone rings
3.  Lift handset to converse with new caller. 
 

Note:   Call waiting will not function if your call 
             forwarding is activated.

3-Way Calling

 To Activate: 

1.  Advise caller to hold 
2.  Depress the LINK button (Special dial tone is 
     heard)
3.  After third party answers, depress the LINK once 
4.  All three parties are connected and can talk 
 

Note:  Any call may be transferred or involved in a 
          3-Way Call, incoming, outgoing, local, long 
          distance or campus calls.

Last Number Redial

To Activate:

1.  Lift handset
2.  Dial 28 OR  pound + pound (##)
3.  The system will automatically redial the last number
     dialed from your phone

Cancel Caller ID Delivery

To Activate:

1.  Lift handset
2.  Dial star (*) + 67
3.  Place your call

Ring Again

To Activate:

1.  Lift handset
2.  Press hookswitch (special dial tone is heard)
3.  Dial 19 (confirmation tone is heard)

To Cancel:

1.  Lift handset
2.  Dial 18 (confirmation tone is heard)
