FAQS--Frequently Asked Questions!
Callers complain that their phone rings every five
minutes and that when they answer the call, there is an electronic device
calling them. It sounds like a series of beeps on the line.
- A fax machine or a modem is dialing in. Fax machines
are notorious for doing this. Someone is trying to send a fax, but somehow sent it
to the wrong phone number. You will continue receiving this annoying
call until the fax gets through. Forward your line to your fax line for
approximately ten minutes. Once the fax gets through, your telephone line will be
cleared of this problem.
How do I forward my telephone line?
- Establish dial tone and dial 10 (feature activation
code), dial the phone number, listen for the tone, and release.
How do I unforward my telephone line?
- Establish dial tone and dial 11 (feature deactivation
code), listen for the tone, and release.
A caller is reaching a busy signal, but the line really is not in use.
- Chances are, it is call forwarded incorrectly. A good
give away is when the telephone cant receive calls, but can still make outgoing
calls.
- Establish dial tone and dial 11 (feature deactivation code),
listen for the tone, and release.
Sometimes people will complain of a busy signal when the handset is lifted to listen
for a dial tone.
- A good way to describe what they are hearing is a
chopped-up (stutter) dial tone. This is a message indicator, and the
phone is letting you know that there is a new message in your voice mail box.
- Dial 453-5950 to access voice mail messages. Once new
messages are heard, the stutter dial tone will clear.
I am getting someone elses calls.
- A telephone may be forwarded to your line. It is
possible that someone has accidentally forwarded their line to yours. When this
happens to you, ask the caller what number they have dialed. Then call us at
453-2484 to have the call forwarding removed from that line.
Can make calls but cannot receive them
- If a line is not receiving calls (but it can still make
them), chances are it is call forwarded. The calls are probably going to another
place.
- Establish dial tone and dial 11(feature deactivation code).
Listen for the tone, and release.
Display does not work
- Chances are the power supply is not plugged in
correctly. Simply disconnect the power supply, count to ten, then reconnect the
power supply.
What Comes In Your Residence Hall Room:
- You will find a number of jacks have been installed in your
room. Only the top jack in the outlet is working when you move in. This line provides
incoming calls, calls to other campus numbers, and local calling at no charge to
you. The other jacks are there for optional services such as a second phone line or
Ethernet service, available at additional costs. You are responsible for providing your
own telephone instruments. If you have any questions about the telephone services in
your room, or any of the optional services we provide, visit our WebPages at
www.infotech.siu.edu/telecom or call us at 618-453-2484. Our office is located on
the 1st floor in the Student Center.
What if my authorization code isnt working?
- First, are you dialing correctly?
- Dialing instructions--8 + authorization code + area code +
phone number
- Do not dial 1 before the area code.
- Wait for a pause after 8 and again after your authorization
code.
- If its still not working, call us at 453-2484 and
well fix it for you.
Does each roommate need an authorization code?
- Yes. We issue each student their own authorization code
so there will be no question as to who made a particular phone call. These codes may
only be used in the assigned room. These are not to be shared.
What happens if someone else gets my authorization code?
- As soon as your discover this has happened, contact the
Telecommunications office immediately. For Students, your code can only be used from
your assigned room, so the security risk is minimal. However take no chances, call
us at 453-2484.
What if my roommate and I both signed up for the same service?
- The application that we receive first is the one that we will
bill. We can bill only one student. Service charges can not be split between
roommates.
When can I sign up for services?
- Any time! You may sign up services during any part of
the semester whether it be adding or removing a particular feature.
As an SIU student, can I access the Internet for free from my residence hall room?
- Yes, Information Technology maintains a pool of modems
available to all SIU students, faculty and staff. To get a password, go to one of
the Information Technology labs located at Faner 1025, Rehn 3, Communication B9 or CASA
112.
The campus modem pool number is busy a lot, and the modems are not the fastest
available. Do I have other choices?
- Information Technology has established the Preferred Internet
Service, which is a pool of 56K modems reserved exclusively for students living in the
residence halls and at Greek Row. It costs $35 per semester to subscribe to this
service. Applications are available from the Area Office in your residence hall
area, the Telecommunications Office at the Student Center or the Computer Lab at Faner
1025.
I dont have 56K modem, can I still use the Preferred Internet Service?
- Absolutely. The 56K will talk to your slower
modem. The speed of the connection will be determined by the highest speed your
modem can achieve.
Why should I subscribe to the Preferred Internet Service?
- The advantage to this service is every subscriber enjoys a
very favorable subscriber to modem ratio. Information Technology is committed to
maintaining a subscriber to modem ratio of no more than eight to one. This means as
a subscriber, you should very seldom encounter a busy signal.
Do I have to pay to have the second phone line in my room activated, if I just want to
dial into the Internet?
- No. Just unplug your telephone and plug in your
computer line. But if you plan to spend a lot of time one line, you may want to have
a second line installed to keep your regular phone line available, but the choice is
entirely yours. If you are interested, there is a one-time charge of $65 and a
monthly fee of $13.47
What is this Ethernet connection that I hear mentioned sometimes?
- Ethernet is another way that your computer can talk to the
campus area network and the Internet. Ethernet is nice because you dont have
to dial in for a connection and because the connection is much faster than a modem.
Ethernet is available only at Thompson Point, Brush Towers and University Park.
Who do I call if I have any questions about getting connected?
- The Computer Support Center, 453-5155
What do I do if I change rooms or move out of University Housing?
- You need to either call us or come into our office so
we can move your services. It is your responsibility to let us know, not
Housings nor your RAs.
