Calling Instructions

Long Distance Calling

You can use SIU provided authorization codes, calling cards or call collect.  10-10-220 programs will not work on campus.

1.  Using SIU Authorization Codes:

  • Dial-8 + Authorization Code + Area Code and Phone Number
  • .
     (NOTE:  DO NOT DIAL 1 BEFORE THE AREA CODE)
2.  800 or 877 Toll Free Calling
  • Dial 9 + 1 + ten digit toll free number.
3.  Calling Collect:
  • Dial 9 + 0 + Area Code and Number to be called. 

Local Dialing Off Campus

1.  Dial 9 to get off campus.  Do not wait for a tone after 
    dialing 9.

  • Local calls include:
    • Carbondale:     351, 457, 529, 549
    • Carterville:     985
    • Cobden:           893
    • De Soto:          867
    • Elkville:           568
    • Herrin:            942, 988
    • Hurst:             987
    • Murphysboro:  684, 687
    • Royalton:         984

Directory Assistance

1.  To get information for an on-campus number:

  • Dial zero (0) when calling from on-campus phone.
  • Dial 453-2121 when calling from cell phone or off-campus phone.
     
2.  To dial Information for an off-campus number or long 
     distance number:
  • Dial 8 + 5 digit Authorization Code (wait for tone) + Area Code + 555-1212

  • (NOTE:  THERE IS A 1.10 CHARGE FOR EACH CALL)
3.  Enhanced 911 service is available on campus at no 
     additional cost.
  • In case of an emergency, dial 911.

Holding

Consultation Hold

To Activate:

1.  Ask the original caller to hold.
2.  Depress the LINK (Hook Switch or Flash) button. 
3.  Special dial tone is heard. 
4.  Dial the third party’s telephone number. 
5.  Ring back tone is heard. 
6.  Third party answers and private consultation occurs. 
7.  Automatic reconnection to original call is made when 
     third party hangs up. 

To Reconnect (if no answer or busy):

1.  Depress the LINK (Hook Switch or Flash) button 
     twice to return to original party


Hold

To Activate (Handset On-Hook):

1.  Ask the caller to hold. 
2.  Depress the LINK (Hook Switch or Flash) button. 
3.  Special dial tone is heard. 
4.  Dial 20 and wait for confirmation tone. 
5.  Hang up. A short ring once every 60 seconds serves as a 
     reminder that a caller is on Hold. 

To Reconnect: 

1.  Lift handset.


Hold, Off Hook

To Activate: 

1.  Ask the caller to hold. 
2.  Depress the Link (Hook Switch or Flash) button. 
3.  Special  dial tone is heard. 
4.  Dial 21. 
5.  Leave handset off-hook, Do NOT hang up. 

To Reconnect:

1.  Depress LINK (Hook Switch or Flash) button. 

NOTE: A call cannot be placed on hold while involved 
             with a conference call. You may hold only one call 
             at a time.

Transferring

To Activate:

1.  Advise calling party that you are going to transfer the
     call. 
2.  Depress the LINK (Hook Switch or Flash) button. 
3.  Special dial tone is heard. 
4.  Dial the 5-digit station number. 
5.  When party answers, announce transfer. 
6.  Replace handset. 

If busy or no answer: 

1.  Depress LINK (Hook Switch or Flash) button 
    TWICE
2.  You are reconnected to the original party.

Call Forwarding

This feature allows you to program your telephone so your calls will automatically ring at another telephone.

To Activate:

1.  Lift handset. 
2.  Dial tone is heard. 
3.  Dial 10. 
4.  Special dial tone is heard. 
5.  Dial number to which calls are to be forwarded. 

  • Last 5 digits for campus number. 
  • 9 + 7 digits for off-campus local number. (Not all phones have this option.) 


To Cancel:

1.  Lift handset. 
2.  Dial tone is heard. 
3.  Dial 11. 
4.  Confirmation tone is heard. 
5.  Replace handset.

Call Parking

This feature allows you to park (hold) a call in "orbit" on your line. The parked call may be retrieved from any station. 

To Activate (while caller is on the line):

1.  Depress the LINK (Hook Switch, Flash, or Tap) button once. 
2.  Special dial tone is heard. 
3.  Dial the Call Park Activation code 16. 
4.  Confirmation tone is heard. 
5.  Replace the handset.

To Retrieve:

1.  From any station, lift handset. 
2.  Dial tone is heard. 
3.  Dial the Call Park Retrieval Code 17. 
4.  Special dial tone is heard.
5.  Dial the station number that was originally used to park 
     the call. 
6.  You are reconnected. 

NOTES: 

  • Your telephone may be used to place and receive other calls while having a call parked.
  • When time-out occurs, the call will return to your line. If your line is busy at the recall time, the timer is reset for another three (3) minutes.
  • Only one call may be parked at one time on each station number.

Call Pickup
Direct Call Pickup

Call pickup allows you to answer incoming calls ringing on another station within a defined group.

To Activate:

1.  Lift handset. 
2.  Dial tone is heard. 
3.  Dial 14. 
4.  The call is now 
     connected to
     your telephone 
     and conversation

This feature allows you to answer any ringing telephone - selectively answering within your pickup group or any other line.

To Activate:

1.  Lift handset. 
2.  Dial tone is heard. 
3.  Dial 15 plus 
     5-digit station of 
     ringing telephone 
     you wish to 
     answer. 
4.  The call is now
     connected to 
     your telephone 
     and conversation 
     can begin.

NOTE: 

  • Call pickup cannot be used to answer Ring Again recalls.

10 Number Speed Call
50 Number Group Speed Call
To Program or Change:

1.  Dial 24.
2.  Special dial tone is heard.
3.  Dial index code for the
     stored telephone number
     (0-9).
4.  Dial the telephone 
     number to be stored + 
     #.
5.  Confirmation tone is 
     heard.

To Use:

1.  Dial star (*) then the
     index code (0-9) + #.

To Delete:

1.  Dial 24.
2.  Special tone is heard.
3.  Dial the index code for
     the stored number you 
     want to delete.
4.  Press pound #.
5.  Confirmation tone is 
     heard.

     phone.
2.  Dial 25.
3.  Special dial tone is heard.
4.  Dial index code for the
     stored telephone number
     (00-49).
5.  Dial the telephone 
     number to be stored +

     heard.

To Use:

1.  Dial star (*) then the 
    index code (00-49) + #.

To Delete:

1.  Dial 25.
2.  Special tone is heard.
3.  Dial the index code for
     the stored number you 
     want to delete.
4.  Press #.
5.  Confirmation tone is
     heard.

6-Way Conferencing

To Activate:

1.  Lift handset. 
2.  Dial the telephone number of the first conferee.  
3.  Depress the LINK (Hook Switch or Flash) button listen for tone. 
4.  Dial 12. 
5.  Depress the LINK button listen for tone. 
6.  Dial the telephone of the next  conferee.  
7.  Depress the LINK button - listen for tone. 
8.  Dial 12 again. 

*Repeat steps 5-8 to add additional conferees to a maximum of 6.
 

If conferee does not wish to enter a conference call:

1.  Depress the LINK (Hook Switch, Flash, or Tap) button- wait for tone. 
2.  Dial 13 for the Conference Call Release. 
3.  Dial 12 to reconnect to the conference OR dial the
     number of the next conferee. 

*A short tone is generated each time a conferee joins the 
  conference and whenever one goes off-hook to leave the 
  conference. 

NOTE: Only two off-campus calls are permitted by this 
             feature.

Ring Again

This feature allows you, when reaching a busy signal, to program your telephone to call (Ring Again) when the campus number is idle.

To Activate: 

1. Depress the Link (Hook Switch or Flash) button once the busy signal tone is heard. 
2. Dial 19 and a Confirmation tone is heard. 
3. Replace handset. 

To Deactivate: 

1. Lift handset. 
2. Dial tone is heard. 
3. Dial 19. 
4. A Confirmation tone is heard.  Replace handset.

Call Waiting

To respond to a Call Waiting tone heard during conversation, you may select A or B.

Selection A: 

1.   To answer a new call, depress the LINK (Hook Switch or Flash) button once and dial 
      21.  The first call will be put on hold. 
2.  Talk to the incoming caller. 
3.  Depress the LINK (Hook Switch or Flash) button and dial 21 to alternate between 
     callers.

Selection B:

1.  Abandon the current call by replacing the handset. 
2.  Your telephone rings. 
3.  Lift the handset to converse with the new caller.
