Outlook Express 6 IMAP account settings
Outlook Express is provided as an embedded part of the Microsoft Windows operating system. It is a functional email client for many uses, but is not standards-compliant with the Internet documents for email control. Users are advised that due to this non-compliance and instabilities in the Outlook Express program, it is not recommended for most users. Other standards-compliant email programs are freely available and provide the same email functionality as Outlook Express, without the instabilities and vulnerabilities. The IT Computer Support Center is recommending the open source program called "Thunderbird" from the Mozilla Project, available for free download at this link.
If you choose to use Outlook Express anyway, use the following document as a guide to setting up the account for the SIUC mail servers. Be aware that if you have a previous or subsequent version of the Outlook Express program, or if changes to the Outlook Express program and the Microsoft Windows operating system updates are applied, this document may not exactly match yours. Such changes occur frequently, and we cann ot create documentation to match every version and sub-version of the Outlook Express program which might be on any given computer. It should be a sufficient working guide to the correct settings, but you might need to adjust the locations of the individual items to match your particular version of the program. Most of them will match very closely, if not exactly. It should match closely enough to get it working with your SIUC email account.
To begin setting up Outlook, start the program using any of the provided icons, on the Desktop, the QuickLaunch menu bar, or the Start, All Programs menu.
If you are presented with an item like this one, choose "Yes." Not every installation will be presented with this screen, do not be concerned if you do not see it. Continue on with the next step in the instructions. The program will continue launching at that point.
This is the main screen for the Outlook Express email client. Choose the Tools menu item and click on Accounts.

On the Mail page, click the "Add" button and select "Mail" from the list that appears. This will start the "Internet Connection Wizard" at the "Create Account" point.
Type your name in the space provided, as you wish it to appear in email messages. Click the "Next" button.
Type in your SIUC email address in the space provided. In the example, "someone@microsoft.com" was used. Replace that with your personal SIUC email address. Click "Next" to go on to the server settings screen.
Choose the server type "IMAP" as shown here, and fill in the incoming and outgoing server names exactly as shown. Be sure to the server names everything precisely as they are shown in the example. Any errors at this point will cause errors when you try to send and/or receive messages. Click "Next" when the spaces are filled in correctly as shown.
Be sure your Network ID account name is in the "Account Name" field. Type your Password in the space provided, using care to enter it correctly. You will not be able to read the password, it will appear as circles rather than readable letters, as shown in this example. If you wish for Outlook Express to store the password between sessions, place a check in the "Remember Password" box. This carries some security risks, as the password can be recovered if an unauthorized person gains access to your computer. You will need to weigh the benefits of not typing the password when you start Outlook against the risks of losing your password.
Be sure that the "Log On Using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)" item is NOT checked. Click "Next."
Click "Finish."
Click "Yes" to get your server folders replicated to the Outlook Express main program screen.
You will be returned to the main Outlook Express screen. Your email account contents will be retrieved and shown under the area of the screen labelled "saluki-mail.siu.edu."
