Dial-up Networking and Windows ME
The following document discusses how to set up a Dial-up Networking connection on Windows Millennium Edition (ME).
At this time the Computer Support Center does not support Windows ME. This information is provided "as-is" and we assume no responsibility for the information provided herein.
This article assumes that you have properly installed a modem on the Windows ME-based computer. If you have not yet installed your modem, first follow the instructions provided by your modem manufacturer, then return to these instructions. If you are having problems with your modem on Windows ME, contact your modem manufacturer.
If you are a Staff or Faculty member, please contact your LAN Administrator for instructions on how to connect to SIUC.
Dial-up Networking Configuration
The following procedure users the Windows ME Internet Connection Wizard to configure your computer for a connection to the SIUC public 56K modem pool.
Click on 'Start' -> 'Settings' -> 'Accessories' -> 'Communications' -> 'Internet Connection Wizard'
Click the radio button for "I want to set up my Internet connection manually ..."
Click the radio button for "I connect through a phone line and a modem."
Click "Next"
In the "Telephone number:" field, key in 4532888
Click "Next"
In the "User name:" data field, key in your user name. If you are not sure what your user name is, look at your SIUC e-mail address. Your user name is always what is to the left of the @ (at) sign. If your SIUC e-mail address is myname@siu.edu, then "myname" is your user name. Be sure ONLY your user name appears in this data field.
Tab to the "Password:" field and key in your password. It is the same password you may have used to dial other SIUC servers and to check your e-mail. When you key in your password, asterisks (*) will replace the actual characters.
Click "Next"
In the "Connection name:" data field, key in a name of your choosing.
Click "Next"
The next screen asks you if you want to set up an Internet mail account now. If you click the "Yes" radio button, Microsoft's Internet Connection Wizard will begin prompting you for information it needs to create an Outlook Express account. You can do this if you wish, but we will not include these instructions in this article.
Click the "No" radio button
Click "Next"
Uncheck the "To connect to the Internet immediately..." box unless you really want to connect at this time.
Click "Finish"
Windows ME will pause a moment and then bring up a dial-up connection window. This is a good time to verify that your settings are correct.
Click "Connect" or "Cancel" as you wish.
This completes the process to create a dial-up connection to SIUC's public 56K modem pool (453-2888).
You can verify that a connection icon for this number was created by clicking 'Start' -> 'Settings' -> 'Dial-Up Networking'.
This opens your dial-up networking folder, where you should see your new icon. Double-clicking the icon will launch a dial-up connection. At this point you should be able to dial in to the SIUC 56k modem banks. If you are unsure of how to do this, consult the online Windows 2000 Professional help system (Start -> Help). Search for 'modems'.
