Windows 95 56K Dial-In Instructions

These instructions are written for SIUC students who have installed Windows 98 and wish to configure their PC to dial in to the SIUC 56K modem pool. This set of instructions are specifically for Windows98 and the 56K system. If you encounter problems at any time during the instructions, call the Computer Support Center at 453-5155 for assistance.
Preparation:
In order to confirm that all necessary software and hardware is installed for Windows 98 Dial-Up Networking, take the following steps.
Step 1: Make sure the Dial-Up Networking software is installed
Double-click on my computer
Look to see is there is a Dial-Up Networking icon in the window.
If there is an icon there, skip to Step 2. If there is not a Dial-Up Networking icon in the window, continue below
Double-click Control Panel, and then double click on Add Remove Programs
Select the Windows Setup tab. You will then see a categorized list of optional software, with check marks next to the categories from which components have already been installed.
Select Communications and click the Details button. Confirm that there is a check mark next to Dial-up Networking. If there is not, click in the empty box so that a check mark appears. When you are done, click OK to return to the previous menu, and then click OK again.

If your computer prompts you for your Windows 98 CD-ROM or diskettes you will need to insert them.
Your computer may also prompt you to restart the computer. Click OK, and the computer will reboot.
Step 2: Make sure your modem is installed
Go to My Computer, then to Control Panel, and then to Modems.
If your modem was auto detected and installed during your installation of Windows 98, it should show up in this window. If you have a modem listed in this window, skip to Creating a Dial-Up icon.
*note - Your modem may not be a Sporster 56k Data Fax modem. The window at left is an example.
If no modem is installed, the Modem Setup Wizard should start automatically when you click on the "Modems" Icon.
If no modem is installed and the Modem Setup Wizard doesn't start automatically click on the Add... button. Just follow the steps outlined by the Modem Setup Wizard and the system will do the rest. Once again, Windows 98 may need your Windows CD or diskettes and may ask to restart the computer.
Creating a Dial-Up Icon
By completing this process you will create an icon that you can double-click to dial into SIUC. The 56K line allows for you to be connected for 4 hours before being disconnected. The following sections will help you create a Dial-Up icon to connect to the server.
Go to My Computer, then to Dial Up Networking, and then to Make New Connection.
Type "SIU 56K" in the box titled "Type a name for the computer you are dialing:" and make sure your modem is listed in the box under Select a device.
You will now be prompted to enter a phone number.
The SIU 56K connection phone number is (618) 453-2888
Enter the Area code "618" in the Area code: box. Enter "453-2888" in the "Telephone number:" box.
Click Next.
Click Finish. You now have an icon for connecting to the SIUC 30-minute server! Follow the steps in the next section to configure the Dial-Up icon for connection to SIU.
Configuring your Dial-Up Connection
Step 1: Setting Dial-Up Connection Properties
Move your mouse pointer directly over the "SIU 56K" icon you just created, and then use your Right mouse button to click on the icon. Click Properties with the Left mouse button to edit the connection settings.
You will see the General properties. Click to uncheck the box next to "Use area code and Dialing Properties"-This will "grey out" the Area code and Country code.
Click the Server Types tab.
If "Log on to Network" is checked, click the box to uncheck it.
Make sure "Enable software compression" is checked.
If "Require encrypted password" is checked, uncheck it.
If "Require data encryption" is checked, uncheck it.
If "Record a log file for this connection" is checked, uncheck it.If "NetBEUI" is checked, click the box to uncheck it.
If "IPX/SPX Compatible" is checked, click the box to uncheck it.
Make sure TCP/IP is checked.
Click the TCP/IP Settings button
Make sure the button next to "Server assigned IP address" is selected.
Make sure the button next to "Server assigned name server addresses" is selected.
The box titled "Use IP header compression" should be checked, and the box titled "Use default gateway on remote network" should also be checked.
Click OK.
Click OK to close this window and to return to the window with the SIU 56K icon.
In this window, click the Connections menu option and click Settings.
A window open like the one below. Follow the following steps to adjust these settings.
Make sure that the first three boxes, Show an icon on the task bar after connected, Prompt for information before dialing, and Show a confirmation dialog after connected, are all checked.
Click the box next to Redial. Set the Box to the right of Before giving up retry: to 50 or 100.
Set the Between tries wait to 0 mins, 1 secs.
Make sure the button next to Prompt to use Dial-Up Networking is selected.
Click OK.
Next, create a desktop shortcut to your dial-in icon.
Use you Right mouse button to right-click on the SIU 56K icon.
Click on Create Shortcut
You will get a window message that states that you cannot create a shortcut here. Click Yes to have the shortcut created on the desktop instead.
You can now close the Dial-Up Networking window and continue to Step 2.
Step 2: Setting Network Control Panel Properties
Go to My Computer, then Control, and then Network.
In the main box you should see a list of installed network components. The list should look similar to the image below. If you have other items listed, you may be able to leave those items listed, but if you have problems connecting, you may have to remove all but the ones listed below. If you have problems connecting, call the Computer Support Center (453-5155) for assistance.
If you do not have TCP/IP, you can add it by doing the following
Click the Add button
Select Protocol from the list and click the Add button
Select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers
Select TCP/IP from the list of Protocols
Click OK
If you do not have Client for Microsoft Networks listed, you can add it by doing the following
Click the Add button
Select Client from the list and click the Add button
Select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers
Select Client for Microsoft Networks from the list of Network Clients
Click OK
You should now have the required components in the list. Click OK. You may be prompted to insert your Windows 98 CD for the copying of some files. Insert the CD is prompted. You will then be prompted to restart you computer. Click OK to restart the computer and continue to the next section--Connecting
Connecting
To connect to SIUC, double-click on the "SIU 56K" icon on your desktop.
You will see a window like the one below. Enter your Network ID in the User name blank. Enter your Network Password in the Password blank. We suggest that you do not check the box next to Save Password for security reasons.
Note: You must first change your Network Password at the following site before you can use the 56K connection; this password change DOES NOT take effect until the following day. https://webmail.siu.edu:443/util/passwd.html
Click the Connect button. A window similar to the one below should display. Windows 98 should start dialing.
Once connected, you'll see a window that tells you that you are connected, and at what speed. You should also see an icon in the lower right of your screen next to the time that looks like two computers connected. The icon should flash blue and green when you are actively using your connection.

When you want to disconnect, you can double-click on the icon next to the time. That will bring up the window mentioned before. Click the Disconnect button to disconnect your connection.
You're on the Internet! You are now ready to check your email or use your favorite web browser!
Using your Dial-Up Connection
I'm Connected -- Now What?
Once you see the "Connected" window on your screen, your PPP link has been established! At this point, you have a number of options. You may run Internet Explorer or Netscape (included on your SalukiWare CD), any other World Wide Web browser, or any other "Internet" software such as the Telnet or Ws_Ftp applications (also included on the SalukiWare CD).
