Configuring the Macintosh for SIUC Public 56K Dialup Access
This document is intended as a quick-install guide for the Macintosh TCP/IP modem connection.
1. To set up Macintosh dialup acess, click on the Apple Menu, select Control Panels, and then the Modem control panel. Select the appropriate modem type for the modem you are using. The Connect Via control may have different information in it, depending upon your individual Macintosh setup. If you have an internal modem, such as those that come with various iMac models, it may say "Internal Modem" rather than "Modem Port". Be sure that whatever is selected is appropriate for your particular system. You will also have to select your particular brand and model of modem; the "Supra 288/336" in the picture is selected only as an example. Now, select the following settings as shown in the picture:
Sound: On
Dialing: Tone
Be certain that "Ignore Dial Tone" is not checked.
2. Now open the Apple Menu, Control Panels, TCP/IP Control Panel. Enter the settings as shown in the following example.
You may add a third "Name Server" address, 131.230.24.1, if you wish, but this is not required.
3. Open the Remote Access Control Panel. Enter the following settings:
Note: For the Name Field (enter your Network ID here (everything to the left of the "@" sign of your e-mail address). For the Password field, enter your Network Password. Checking the Save Password box is optional, and left to your own disgression. The Number field should contain 453-2888.
3. Click the Options button.
4. Select the Redialing Tab, enter the number of times you wish the modem to automatically redial if there is a busy signal, and how many seconds to wait between attempts. Five seconds is the minimum delay allowed.
5. Select the Connection tab. Check the following boxes (and only these boxes should be checked).
6. Select the Protocol Tab check the following boxes (and only these boxes should be checked).
7. Click OK
8. Now you are able to attempt a connection with our server.
9. Start by clicking the Connect button
10. You should hear the modem dial then it will go quiet.
11. The connection dialogue window should disappear, and a small flashing "telephone pole and computer" icon should begin flashing on your menu bar. You are now connected.
12. After the PPP connection has been established you may then run client software such as Netscape, Eudora, Fetch, etc.
