Computer Support CenterModem Access at SIUC
Southern Illinois University offers several choices for modem access to the Internet. Each choice is listed below along with its description of benefits.
Private 56K access
Dialin to modems with speeds up to approximately 56Kbps is offered at a charge of $35 per semester. This service is available only to on-campus dorms. The advantage of this service is the lower subscriber to modem ratio than the free dialin servers. What this means is, a subscriber to this service has a better chance of getting a connection to the Internet on the first try than someone dialing in to the free dialin servers. To find out more about subscribing to this service visit Telephone Services on the web. For instructions on how to set up you computer to dial in to the private 56K modem pool follow the link below.Free 56K access
Internet access through the free 56K modem pool is available to all Faculty, Staff, and Students with a valid Network ID. This service was added January, 2000. Connections established with this modem pool can reach speeds up 56Kbps. The normal connection speed for this type of modem is about 48,333 bps. This pool of modems allows the computer to be connected for a maximum of 4 hours. After this 4 hour time period is expired, the server will disconnect, and you must wait the 15 minute wait period before connecting again.
