Computer Support CenterConfiguring System Scan Properties for VirusScan 4.5.1
After installing McAfee VirusScan 4.5.1, you should configure the various features of the application. There are several user-configurable items available, and appropriate settings are discussed below. If you are not running the latest version of the scan engine, then you need to retrieve the superdat file and run it, or use the AutoUpgrade function to bring your scan engine and DAT files up to the latest version.
Open the McAfee VirusScan Control Console program. It is usually available as a minimized icon next to the clock (lower left of your Windows screen); it will be the one that looks like a small magnifying glass. The program has various names, depending upon the version of Windows that you are using.
- In Windows 95 it is called " McAfee VirusScan Scheduler."
- In Windows 98 and XP it is named " McAfee VirusScan Console."
- In Windows NT Workstation and Windows 2000 Professional it is called "Network Associates VirusScan Console."

VirusAlert-L Mailing List
With the increasing demand from the Campus Community for information and combined with Information Technology's mission to provide good customer service, we have created a mailing list named VIRUSALERT-L.
This list is the official mail list to receive notification concerning recent viruses and information concerning updates to the McAfee VirusScan. The purpose of this list is to provide a quick and uniform means to notify the user community at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, and Southern Illinois University School of Medicine at Springfield.
Because the number of viruses on the Internet increases as each day goes by, and because of the complexity of some of these viruses, Network Associates may make available an update file between the normal monthly updates. If this file is made available, it will be placed in the appropriate directory on the SIUC Public FTP server allowing users to use the update function in their VirusScan software. If you have your VirusScan updates scheduled for once a month, you will not receive these updates until the next time your VirusScan software automatically updates itself. To protect your computer from these new viruses, you can manually run the update function when these files are made available, provided you are aware that the files are available. A notification of this event occurring will be sent out to all subscribers of the VirusAlert-L mailing list. For this reason, it is in your best interest to subscribe to this mailing list.
To subscribe to this list, simply send an email message to listserv@siu.edu. Do not place any text in the subject field, and only place the following in the body of the message:
SUB VIRUSALERT-L FirstName LastName
(Replace FirstName with your real first name, and LastName with your real last name). You will receive a message asking for your confirmation for signing up for the list.
