Computer Support CenterInstalling Open Transport PPP 1.0 for the Macintosh with Configuration Instructions for SIUC.
OT/PPP is Apple Computer's Macintosh implementation of PPP, the Point-to-Point Protocol, which allows you to use TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) over asynchronous serial lines. OT/PPP makes it possible for your Mac to act as a peer with other host computers around the world. This means that you can use telnet, FTP, Web browsers (such as Netscape), and other services directly from your Macintosh.
To use OT/PPP, you must be dialing into a server that is capable of supporting PPP. OT/PPP works with applications that use TCP/IP. For more information please read the OT/PPP text file that is included with OT/PPP. OT/PPP was developed at, and is licensed and copyrighted by Apple Compuer,Inc.
Minimum System Requirements for Open Transport PPP 1.0
- Open Transport/PPP is designed to work on Mac OS-compatible computers with a 68030- or 68040-family microprocessor, or a PowerPC.
- Recommended system software for OT/PPP is 7.5.3 or later. OT/PPP will run on system software versions 7.1, 7.1.1, and 7.1.2 providing they are updated with Open Transport 1.1.2 or later. (Open Transport 1.1.2 or later can be downloaded for free directly from Apple Computer, Inc. at ftp://ftp.info.apple.com/Apple.Support.Area/Apple_SW_Updates/US/
- Macintosh/Networking-Communications/Open_Transport/ .
- Open Transport 1.1.2 is the minimum networking software to be installed on your computer. Later versions of OT/PPP come with Mac OS 8.0 and 8.1.
- At least 512K of RAM.
- For more modern Macintosh computers (PowerPC's with OS versions 8.6 through 9.2.2) the TCP/IP protocol and Remote Access are different versions, but functionally the same. The setup is identical to the older OT/PPP system, requiring the same information and settings.
Installing OT/PPP
1. First you will need to have StuffIt Expander installed on your machine so that once you download the OT_PPP_1.0.sea.bin file, it can be decompressed.
2a. Now you need to find out if your operating system is running Open Transport 1.1.2 or newer. To do this, go to your System Folder and then the Control Panel folder and look for TCP/IP. Highlight the TCP/IP control panel by clicking on it once, go to the File menu and choose Get Info, look at the version number. If your version of Open Transport is older than 1.1.2 or you have MacTCP instead of TCP/IP control panel, you need to follow the link above and download Open Transport 1.1.2 installers from Apple Computers (If you have Mac OS 7.6 or newer, these files are included on your system CD and can be installed directly from that CD).
2b.Next, verify that your Operating System has only one networking software installed. To do this, go to the File menu while the Finder is active and select Find. Do a find on TCP and PPP. If both TCP/IP and MacTCP are found, you need to drag MacTCP to the trash. If just the MacTCP control panel is present, and no other TCP/IP or MacTCP control panels, then you are not running Open Transport and you need to verify that your operating system meets the above requirements and install Opent Transport 1.1.2 or newer. This is very important. If you do an install with existing network software on your machine, OT/PPP will not function properly and this will delay your ability to access the network via SIUC's modems.
3. Double click on OT_PPP_1.0.sea to extract the OT/PPP Install Disk Image (see picture below).
4. You must use Disk Copy to load the disk image onto a floppy disk.
Disk Copy is located on the System Software CD that came with your computer or it can be downloaded from Apple Computer, Inc. at ftp://ftp.info.apple.com/Apple.Support.Area/Apple_SW_Updates/US/Macintosh/Utilities/ . Download the Disk_Copy_6.1.3.sea.bin file. (To successfully download and install Disk Copy 6.1.3 you will need to already have StuffIt Expander installed on your computer). All you need to do is launch the Disk Copy program by double clicking on it. Next go to the Utilites menu and select Make a Floppy. From the browse window that appears select the OT/PPP Install disk image. Disk Copy will now ask for a floppy disk, insert the disk in the computer's disk drive. Allow Disk Copy to finish making the disk before conituing.
5. Next double click on OT/PPP Install disk that you just created (making sure that the disk is in your computer's floppy disk drive.)
6. Double click on the Installer file in the OT/PPP Install disk.
7. Choose Easy Install from the menu when prompted by the OT/PPP Installer.
8. When the OT/PPP Installer is finished you must restart your computer.
9. Go to the Modem control panel by opening the Control Panels folder in the System Folder. Select the appropriate modem type for the modem brand you are using. Select the following settings:
Note: You will have to select your particular brand of modem where in the example Supra 288/336 is selected.
10.Now open the TCP/IP Control Panel. Enter the settings as shown in the following example.
11. Open the PPP Control Panel. Enter the following settings:
Note: For the Name Field (enter your Network ID here (everything before the @ sign of your e-mail address). For the Password field, enter your eight digit challenger password. Don't forget to check the Save Password box. The Number field will have the phone number of the server you are dialing. At SIUC the phone numbers are 453-5500 for a half hour maximum connection time limit and 453-3500 for a four hour maximum connection time limit.
12. Hit the Options button.
13. Select the Redialing Tab select the number of times you wish the modem to automatically redial if there is a busy signal and how many seconds to wait between attempts.
14. Select the Connection tab. Check the following boxes (and only these boxes should be checked).
15. Select the Protocol Tab check the following boxes (and only these boxes should be checked).
16. Click OK
17. Now you are able to attempt a connection with our server.
18. Start by hitting the Connect button
19. You will hear the modem dial then it will go quiet.
20. Next a PPP Terminal window will open and ask for your login.
21. Enter your Network ID and hit return.
22. When prompted to enter your challenger password, enter your password and hit return. The default password is an eight digit number AAAABBBB, where AAAA is the last four digits of your social security number and BBBB is your University PIN number (What is my PIN number?).
23. Next a menu will scroll onto the screen. This is the SIUC Kids Menu. Choose Initiate an PPP connection by entering a P and hit return.
24. The terminal window will automatically close. You will notice under the Status area of the PPP control panel it will say connected. You will be given the speed at which you are connected and a timer will begin to count. You are now connected.
Note: After the PPP connection has been established you may then run client software such asNetscape, Eudora, Fetch, etc.
