Mac OS X Printing Instructions


Requirements:

In order to use the printing service on or off Campus the files below will be needed to be downloaded and installed in sequential order. Proceed to follow the directions for each step. (Mac OS X 10.3 or later required)

  1. Cisco VPN for Wireless and Off Campus printing
  2. Xerox Phaser 4500 & 8550 Driver Installer Packages
  3. Printing Popup Installer Package
  4. Pharos Notify Installer Package

Installing Xerox Phaser Driver Installer Packages:

  1. Log in to the machine, using an administrator account.
  2. Download driver package from ftp.siu.edu/cwps/mac/Phaser_8500_Installer_enu.hqx
  3. Double-click on this file and continue to click Next until the extraction has finished
  4. Double-click on the file "Phaser 8500 Installer". You will be requested to authenticate yourself as an administrator.
  5. Select Continue to proceed past the welcome screen .
  6. Select the Accept button to agree to the user licence.
  7. Select the Install button.
  8. Close the newly opened product registration window.
  9. Installation has been successful. Proceed to select the Quit button.
  10. Download driver package from ftp.siu.edu/cwps/mac/Phaser_4500_Installer.hqx
  11. Double-click on this file and continue to click Next until the extraction has finished
  12. Double-click on the file "Phaser_4500". You will be requested to authenticate yourself as an administrator.
  13. Select Continue to proceed past the welcome screen .
  14. Select the Accept button to agree to the user licence.
  15. Select the Install button.
  16. Close the newly opened product registration window.
  17. Installation has been successful. Proceed to select the Quit button.
  18. Open the Machintosh_HD and locate and open the Applications folder
  19. Drag Xerox Support Centre folder into the Trash Bin.
  20. Open the Xerox folder and drag the Xerox Printer Scout folder into the Trash bin. Proceed to Empty the Trash bin.

Installing Pharos Popup:

To install Pharos Popup for Mac OS X

  1. Log in to the machine using an administrator account.
  2. Obtain the file Popup.dmg from ftp.siu.edu/cwps/mac/popup.dmg
  3. Double-click this file to create a new disk image in Finder. This disk contains the Pharos Popup installer, Popup.pkg.
  4. Double-click the installer to run it.
  5. Select Continue to proceed past the welcome screen.
  6. Select a destination disk and select Continue.
  7. Click Install or Upgrade. The installer automatically installs Pharos Popup and required support files.You will be requested to authenticate yourself as an administrator.
  8. At the end of the installation process, the installer launches the Pharos Popup Setup Assistant.

Installing Pharos Notify:

  1. Download Notify_6.dmg from ftp://ftp.siu.edu/cwps/mac/Notify_6.dmg
  2. Double-click on Notify_6.dmg to open the file.
  3. Double-click on Notify.mpkg
  4. Select Continue to proceed past the welcome screen.
  5. Select Continue to proceed past the information page.
  6. Select a destination disk and select Continue.
  7. Click Install or Upgrade. The installer automatically installs Pharos Notify and required support files.You will be requested to authenticate yourself as an administrator.
  8. At the end of the installation process, the installer launches the Pharos Notify Setup Assistant.

Configuring Pharos Popup Setup Assistant:

To configure Pharos Popup Setup Assistant for Mac OS X, follow the steps below:

  1. Enter the IP address of the Pharos Popup Server. 131.230.135.107



  2. Leave the Pharos Popup Server Port and Timeout as default. These fields are already set to the recommended values. Click Continue.
  3. Leave the Popup Client Port as default. This port is used for communication between Popup components and the recommended value is already present in the field. Click Continue.
  4. Popup will be enabled by default. If you would like to disable Popup, click the Disable button. This will disable Popup on the client machine until it is enabled by running the Popup Setup Assistant again and clicking the Enable button. Click Continue.
  5. A summary of the entered values will be displayed. Click Done to complete the setup process.
  6. To reconfigure Popup at a later time, run the Popup Setup Assistant again. It is located in "/Library/Application Support/Pharos/Utilities".

Note: Pharos Popup will now be running on the client machine and will be automatically launched every time a user logs in.

Configuring Pharos Notify Setup Assistant:

  1. Enter the IP address of the Pharos Database Server. 131.230.135.107
  2. Leave the Pharos Server Port and Timeout as default. These fields are already set to the recommended values. Click Continue.
  3. Select Continue. Notify is enabled by default.
  4. Select Done.
  5. Select Close.

Configuring Printers:

To start using Pharos Popup for Mac OS X, add Popup printer queues on the client machine:

  1. Open Printer Setup Utility in "/Applications/Utilities/".
  2. On Mac OS X 10.4, click the Add button in the toolbar, then hold down the Option key on the keyboard and click the More Printers... button. On Mac OS X 10.3, hold down the Option key on the keyboard and click the Add button in the toolbar.
  3. From the topmost popup button, select Advanced.

  4. From the Device popup button, select Pharos Print Server.

  5. In the Device Name field, enter in the following name for the new Black and White printer: CWPS BW Print Queue
  6. In the Device URI field, enter the Unified Resource Identifier for the Black and White Printer: popup://131.230.135.107:515/CWPSBWMACQUEUE
  7. From the Printer Model popup button, select Xerox, then from the list select Xerox Phaser 4500DX

  8. Click Add then follow the steps below to add the Color Print Queue.
  9. In the Device Name field, enter a name for the new Color printer: CWPS Color Print Queue
  10. In the Device URI field, enter the Unified Resource Identifier for the Color Printer: popup://131.230.135.107:515/CWPSCOLORMACQUEUE
  11. From the Printer Model popup button select Xerox, then from the list select Xerox Phaser 8550DX

  12. Click Add. The new Pharos Popup queues will now show up in the list of printers as pictured below.

  13. To print to the new queue, select it from the printer popup button in the print dialog of any application.

Printing Using Pharos Popup:

  1. Print a document as you normally would. Be sure to select the correct printer. “CWPS Black and White print queue” prints ONLY in black ink and “CWPS Color Print Queue” prints only color pages even though they are printing to the same printer.
  2. Upon clicking ‘OK”, the popup client will prompt you to enter in your Network ID and Job Name. (Be sure to type in your Network ID correctly. It will not prompt you if it is incorrect. You will be unable to retrieve your print job if this happens.)

Note: If printing in color you will be prompted with information about the job. You must accept the color job in order to proceed. The job will not be sent until you click Yes.

Your print job will be sent only to the following locations on Campus automatically. (Xerox printers are the only printers that are able to use the wireless connection.)

  • Agriculture Building - 2nd floor room 222
  • Applied Sciences & Arts Building - 1st floor, room 112, Computer Learning Center 2
  • Communications Building - basement, room 9, Computer Learning Center 4/New Media Center, room 2010
  • Faner Hall - 1st floor, entrance 2A, rooms 1025 & 1031, Computer Learning Center 1
  • Grinnell Hall - 2nd Floor by Mail Area
  • Lentz Hall - basement, computer lab
  • Lesar Law Building - Cafeteria, and Law Library 1st Floor
  • Lindegren Hall - MRC & room 203 <--- School of Medicine affiliates only
  • McLafferty Annex - Mc Lafferty Road
  • Morris Library - 1st floor
  • Neckers Building - 1st floor, Computer lab room 146

Troubleshooting:

Q: I have installed the popup software but I keep getting this error? Why?

A: You may or may not be connected to the SIU wireless network or are not connected using the VPN software.

To resolve this issue follow the steps below:

Step 1.

Connect to a wireless access point on Campus (SIUC-XX) or off Campus internet connection.

Step 2.

Connect using the Cisco VPN client.

If you do not have a VPN client please go to http://wireless.it.siu.edu/ and follow the posted directions.

Q: Every time I print to the CWPS Color Print Queue I get this error message? Why?

A: You have not deleted unnecessary files located on your computer.

To resolve this issue follow the steps below:

Step 1.

Open the Machintosh_HD and locate and open the Applications folder.

Step 2.

Drag the Xerox Support Centre folder into the Trash Bin.

Step 3.

Open the Xerox folder and drag the Xerox Printer Scout folder into the Trash Bin. Proceed to Empty the Trash Bin.

Directions for Printing Double Sided With a Xerox printer:

1. Print as you normally would.

  2. Click on the Copies & Pages Scroll Bar and select Layout.

  3. Change from Off to Long-edged binding or Short-edge binding.

4. Select Print.

Directions for Printing Alternative Media with Xerox Printer:

Removing Printing Popup:

To remove Printing Popup from a client machine, run the Pharos Uninstaller:

  1. Launch the Uninstaller application in "/Library/Application Support/Pharos/Utilities".
  2. Select Pharos Popup and any other Pharos components that you would like to uninstall, then click Continue.
  3. A list of the selected items will be shown. Click Continue.
  4. Type in an administrator user name and password when required to do so. The selected components will be removed from the client machine.
  5. Click Done and log out of the client machine.

Notes

Popup is currently not compatible with the Fast User Switching feature of Mac OS X 10.3 and later. Always disable Fast User Switching when installing Popup on a client machine.
