Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs

How much does it cost to print?

  • Black & white printing is 10 cents per page
  • Color printing is 70 cents per page

Printing is billed by the job, not simply by the page. Black & white printing is the default. You must specifically select color printing when sending the job to the printer if you wish color output.

If color output is required for some pages of a document and not others, we strongly advise that you send the color pages to the printer as a separate print job. If color printing is selected for an entire document, the printer will print (and bill) all pages as if they were color, even if they do not contain any color images. Any document with both color and black & white printing should be printed as at least two separate jobs. Print the color pages only as a color print job, and then send the pages with only black and white as a black and white print job. This will save you a substantial amount on each such printing job.

Duplex printing, printing on both sides of the same sheet of paper, is available. Using this feature can also save money. Specifically, for black and white printing the cost for the front side of a page is 10 cents and the back of the same page will be charged an additional 6 cents. Color printing is 70 cents for the front of the page and an additional 42 cents for the back of the same sheet. For example, printing the front only of two separate pages in black & white would cost 20 cents. The same two pages printed on one sheet would only cost 16 cents. For color printing, two pages printed on the front side would cost $1.40. Printed on one sheet the cost would be $1.12.

How do I send a print job?

After you have completed your work, click "print" as you normally would. Choose whether you wish to print in color or in black and white. This will bring up a dialog box and you will enter your Network ID. Go to any CWPS print release station location on campus, insert your Debit Dawg card, and your print job will appear on-screen. Your current Debit Dawg account balance will appear on the bottom of the screen, as well as the cost of the print job.

NOTE: If you happen to be the first person of the day to use one of the printers and it does not seem to be responding, you may need to "wake" the printer from the power saving or "sleep" mode. You may report the problem to the location manager, or wake the printer yourself. To do this, simply press the "OK" button on the printer control panel to cause it to wake and start the warm-up procedure. If the printer has been in sleep mode for very long it may take as much as five minutes for it to warm up and be ready for printing.

Under no circumstances should the printers be turned off or unplugged. Report any problems to the CWPS staff or manager of the lab or location where you are trying to print.

Also be aware that the printers should never be moved. There are reservoirs of molten wax inside the printers. If you move or jostle the printers, this wax will spill over inside the printer and may make the printer unusable until after it has been removed to a repair depot and thoroughly cleaned. If for some reason there is a legitimate need to move a printer, please ask the printing staff to do so do not attempt to move it yourself.
